Do you have guests coming for the Holidays?

Entertaining during the holidays season give us the chance to get together with family and friends.  Along with the presents and dinners comes decorating and getting your homes ready for the holiday season.  I have found that one of the things that I like to do for my guest is to redo the powder room or guest bath.  When I have planned far enough ahead a fresh coat of paint looks wonderful.  When I have not planned that far ahead, which is the usual, new towels, bath mats and accessories come to the rescue and are truly appreciated especially by overnight guests.
At Hildreth's we not only carry luxurious bath linens, bath accessories and shower curtains, we have wonderful candles, soaps and body lotions to pamper your guests and you.

Now that the Thanksgiving is past, it is officially time to start
decorating for the holidays. Whether it is hanging stockings from
the fireplace mantle, draping greens from the stairway or placing
wreaths on doors and/or walls, your Holiday decorating should be
fun and in your favorite style. You may love the traditional red
and green of Christmas or want to use gold or silver, white or aqua,
or whatever color says “celebrate” to you.

At Hildreth’s we have a beautiful selection of Holiday decorations,
linens and accessories to help you make your home festive and
fun. There is also a wonderful array of cards, wrapping paper and
ribbons. We would be happy to assist you in getting your home
ready for the Season.

Holiday Shopping - shop local

I have decided to give a shopping tip rather than a design tip - Shop local - you will be happier in the long run. You will also be supporting your local community.  Instead of sitting in traffic, waiting to get into the malls, looking for parking, just to go into a crowded store,  then find someone to wait on you and wait on yet another line to pay, is a process.  I think takes some of the spirit out of buying a Christmas present.  Why not take advantage of a store like Hildreth's where the service is better, the sales people are helpful and the store itself has an old fashioned charm.  They will even box and wrap you gift at no extra charge!

Holiday Traditions

With this Holiday season upon us,  remember that the simplest of things make the holiday more meaningful. When my boys were little, we would pick one day that we knew would be picture day for the holiday cards. We would dress up and take multiple pictures, knowing that one would be sent to all the family to show how we'd grown during that last year. When we received the pictures back we would sort through them, laugh and pick the best one. As technology changed, we would set up the tripod and then run to the TV to view the silly pics or faces that were either mistakes or purposeful. We looked forward to this laugh session every year...As the boys have gotten older and moved away, it is a harder tradition to keep but one that we will continue with our grandchildren. We'd love to hear from you about your family traditions on our blog!

Whether you like pale, soft hues or  dramatic and bright colors, black looks fantastic.  It's very sleek and dynamic.
With a subtler overall color scheme, black makes a bold yet classy statement.  The black accents the paler colors and vice versa.
With a brighter aesthetic, black is an additional bold "color," complimenting yet not competing with your furnishings.
Every room can have one piece of black--whether it's a lampshade, throw pillow or chair-and-a-half.

Arched Windows

Trying to treat windows that have an arch at the top can be challenging to say the least.
One of the best ways I have found to handle this type of window is by using drapes that are mounted above the top of the arch. Given the fact that these drapes are usually rather long a decorative traverse is most likely the best way to hang them. Another solution is a shaped cornice that follows the curve of the window.  With the first option  keep in mind that decorative wood traverse rods come in different diameters and can be painted or stained to any finish suitable for your decor. So if this is one of your design problems, stop by Hildreths and let one of our designers help you!

A hot trend in home furnishings today is metal and
iron mixed with wood and/or leather.  This gives a very
sharp, semi-contemporary feel, while very adaptable to
traditional tastes, too.
For example, a dresser of dark, distressed wood and
metal or iron handles goes beautifully with mahogany
as well as all-metal casegoods.
The great thing—whether you have an ultra-contemporary
aesthetic or are comfortable in a more traditional style,
any of the pictured pieces will work for you.
All are available for immediate delivery!  Come see them “in
person” at Hildreths!

Make the Thanksgiving “kid’s table” the table the kids want to sit at.

Keep the little ones busy before the turkey is served. Put down butchers paper on the tabletop and make a “turkey” crayon and marker holder centerpiece out of a half of a pumpkin by using the crayons or markers for the tail and a construction paper head. Or have them make individual “Mr. Potato head turkeys” by giving each place setting their own apple for the body, cubes of melon in a few different colors along with grapes and wooden skewers for the tail, melon balls for the head and raisins for the eyes. The little ones will love taking home their own made party favor.

Ottomans (hassocks) have been in existence for 300 years and are easily welcomed
into the home or office in an ever evolving decorative and functional way. With such
diversity, cocktail ottomans come in many shapes and sizes. Storage ottomans can clean
up and organize clutter while serving as cocktail tables. Ottomans can serve as focal
points of a room – place a beautiful bench ottoman in your foyer. Choose your fabric or
leather based on the type of use your ottoman(s) will get. As a space saver, a favorite is
a wicker/glass cocktail table that fashionably stores ottomans below when you need that
extra seating. Bring a dash of personality with comfort into your home. Reflect your inner
creativity with our abundant selection of ottomans/cocktail tables.

Dessert Table

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching our first thoughts are of the
dining table were the main course will be served. Lets not over look the
dessert table! A great way to create visual interest is to take dessert out
of the dining area and move it to another room or even outside. Creating
a dessert location away from where the main course was served will add
charm, interest and character to the end of your dinner for example a
sunroom, porch or outdoors.

Designing your dessert table with footed compotes, trifle bowls and stacks
of dessert plates will add depth and interest. Use linens on your dessert
table that surround you with the colors of fall while enjoying Grandma’s
apple pie.

Hildreths carries beautiful linens that will help you to create your holiday

The beauty of lighting a candle is sometimes overlooked  -- not only can it add a wonderful fragrance, but it can also create a peaceful calm in a room.  Years ago candles were primarily used to provide light, sometimes heat and also to tell time. Today they are used to enhance our senses in the form of decoration. You might be surprised to know that Hildreths has an extensive selection of not only candles but different holders to put them in and on. The colors available are both year round and seasonal. With Thanksgiving less than two weeks away, make time to stop by Hildreths and stock up on your holiday colors!

wall coverings and whiteboard wallpaper the kids would love to use with special dry erase
markers. Wall coverings can give pop to a room used on just one accent wall, they can

Decorating with photos

Decorating with your own photos can be a fun and inexpensive way to personalize your
space. You can also use programs of favorite plays, invitations, sheet music, album
covers or anything that shows your personality. You can buy a book of your favorite
photo’s and frame in inexpensive frames and white matting. Secure favorite photos to
matte boards with black photo corners.
Organize your collections by grouping similar objects, similar size of frames or frames of
same colorings in an artful arrangement. Don’t shy away from over sized art. Instead of
using one piece use multiples. Groups of three work best! Frames look great arranged on
gallery shelves.
At Hildreth’s we have a large assortment of frames that would make a great statement
and show you individual personality. They also make great gifts for anyone! Visit us

Shopping for a new Sofa.

You may have an idea of what you like when you begin to shop for a sofa.  There are many things to consider  before making that purchase, as many options exist as well a many price ranges.
Cushions may come in foam, down, down wrap, down blend, there are also alternatives to down, cushions may have coils/springs.  back pillows can be attached, semi-attached, scattered. Construction can be drop in coil units or 8-10 way hand tied.  Softer cushions may seat you closer to the ground causing you to have to pull yourself up and out of a sofa, where firmer cushions tend to seat you higher.  depths 9seat from front to back) vary with sofas, taller people are usually comfortable in deeper seating.  There are slipcovers you can choose, skirted sofas, non skirted, upholstered sofas, even collage sofas.  Order a contrast welt for a different look, or 5" fringe for a more traditional dramatic effect.  stop in , play musical chairs, let us assess your needs and help you find what suits you best.

“Pet-friendly" home

“Pet-friendly” is a term often used to describe places that welcome pets with their owner’s such as Hildreths.  A pet-friendly home, is a home that considers the needs of the pet and owners as part of the interior design. To avoid your pet- loving home looking like a doghouse, consider the many pet-friendly materials that can be incorporated easily into your home starting with your upholstery.  Assuming your pet is allowed on the furniture, and we all know they are, it should be durable and stain resistant.  Consider a color and a texture that will help hide your pet’s fur and can be brushed off easily.  If your upholstery has washable covers, even better.  Consider the color of your pet’s fur and whether your pet goes outside and digs or swims.  A black dog mixes well with a navy sofa while a white cat would fit happily into a home with white canvas slipcovers.

Hopefully books will never be extinct.

Although it is the age of the e-reader, hopefully books will never be extinct.
Bookcases can solve design problems by adding depth, a visual focal point and
by organizing your home. Now all those books you so love have a home and
look beautiful. This works for more than just books…a treasured set of china,
decorative objects and seasonal decorations can all be displayed on bookshelves.
Since they are not deep, they take up minimal real estate in the room while
providing a sense of importance in the d├ęcor. A wall of bookcases in a smaller
room can actually make the room seem bigger.

In Hildreth’s Design Dept. we can show you the many types and styles of
bookcases, in different woods, stain, paint finishes and metals. Whatever your
design style is, we can find the piece that will complete your look.

Happy Halloween!

Just as the scary sights of the holiday spook us, the scary sounds creep us.  The sounds of the wind blowing, the ghosts and goblins booing, the monster haunting, the blood curdling screams, dim/dark rooms with creaky floors.   Topped off with Vincent price narrating a story backed by startling music and you have created ambiance.  Ambiance is the atmosphere of an environment and music can be a huge contributing factor that helps you succeed with overall goal of your design.  Music can reflect all different types of emotions, from despair to inspiration.  Different types of music help us unwind reflect, it can draw out different emotion, sooth us, lead us to dance and can motivate us to be more productive.  Music helps to make a house a home, it is just one way to create the atmosphere you desire.  Many ideas await you at Hildreths.  Stop in and let us help you create the environment you desire.

Here are some tips on how to get your jack-o-lantern ready in time for Halloween. Start
with a plan and proper supplies for a successful outcome. Sketch out your drawing of
what you want your jack-o-lantern to look like on a plain piece of paper or use a water
marker and draw on the pumpkin itself. If you do not have a pumpkin carving set now
is a great time to invest in one. Because the blades are small they work best on making
smaller cuts. When cutting around the top of the stem cut on an angle this will keep the
top from falling inside the pumpkin. Scoop out the inside of the pumpkin remove all
seeds. The seeds can be roasted if you like. A safe way to light your jack-o-lantern is to
use a flame less candle. Have fun, be safe and enjoy the season.

Hildreth's also has many 71inch,  77 inch , mini and apartment sofas so any small space can be accommodated.
Of course, there are always big sofas, ottomans and chairs-and-a half's, as shown in
the other two pics, if space is unlimited.
