Is a Round or Square Shaped Table Right For Your Outdoor Living Area?

Summer is so close, I can picture it in my mind sitting down to a classic summer BBQ with family and friends, enjoying the beautiful summer weather on Long Island. Memorial Day is just around the corner! Now is the time to start preparing for those beautiful summer memories to take place by getting your outdoor living space ready.

Round or rectangle? That should be the first question you ask yourself before shopping for an outdoor dining table. You need a table which will accommodate your needs and fit your outdoor living area. Here are a few things you should consider.

Function & Design
What you will be using your outdoor dining table for is key when choosing between a rectangle and a round shape. If the outdoor table is used for dining with large groups, a round table will easily accommodate everyone. You can fit extra chairs around a round table when necessary.
A rectangle shaped table is less forgiving. Squeezing in extra chairs doesn't work well because of the corners.  If you have a set number of people that will be enjoying your outdoor table, or like for a table to double as a serving station, a rectangle may be right. Also, if you have children a rectangle shaped table can accommodate a tennis style bench, which is ideal for a family with children. A bench offers easy in and out seating and can fit more people along a side of a table then chairs can.

Whether you choose a rectangular or circular shaped table, it must be in balance with the size of your patio or deck. The table should be large enough to accommodate the average number of guests you typically entertain and be proportionally appropriate to your patio or deck. A round table will create a more intimate feel because everyone is equal distance apart so no one will be left out of the conversation. A rectangular table allows for eye to eye contact among guests and is ideal for long narrow patios.

After considering function, design and size; your personal preference is generally the deciding factor. There are many amazing styles to choose from in rectangle or round shaped outdoor tables, with endless amounts of materials and colors to choose from. The table shape should also fit and flow well with the rest of your outdoor furniture and surroundings. Barlow Tyrie has some great Teak options, including traditional all Teak styles and more contemporary Teak and stainless steel styles. Whichever shape and style you go with remember, it’s all about the memories you make at that table all summer long!

Traditional or Contemporary? How to choose the right teak style outdoor furniture for your home.

Traditional or contemporary, there is a teak style for every yard. Who knew there were so many different teak furniture styles to choose from? I know I sure didn't until I met Tom, patio furniture guru, at Hildreth’s in Southampton. He gave me a tour of the show room and described how he helps people choose the right teak for their backyard. He said, “envision your back yard, what does it look like?” I gave it some thought, in my head I pictured bright green grass with the Long Island summer sun shining down on it, shrubs lining the back of the yard, beautiful flowers blooming around my patio with a brick walkway leading to it. He replied, “would you say your backyard is more traditional?” Then he introduced me to this round teak table, perfect fit for one of my patios I thought, but I still needed something else.

Here's Tom, the patio furniture guru!

Then, he introduced me to this big guy. It is large enough for a fun summer gathering, I could defiantly see myself relaxing out doors with friends and family having a great BBQ over the summer. Can't you?

Also, while I was there I saw some contemporary outdoor teak tables and chairs. They maintain the same classic appeal as the tradition teak outdoor furniture but with an edge. A teak table with a mix of teak wood and aluminum or stainless steel would be the perfect fit for a backyard that has a modern or contemporary feel.

Beautiful teak dining tables and chairs have always been desirable because they great to look at, durable and low maintenance. So weather your back yard is traditional or contemporary there are a bunch of great Barlow Tyrie teak sets to choose from that will fit the style of your back yard. Barlow Tyrie provides superior design and craftsmanship in every one of their outdoor furniture pieces so you can rest assured you will be able to enjoy these teak outdoor furnishing for many summers to come.

“Poofs” are a great way to add extra seating to a small area

“Poofs” are a great way to add extra seating to a small area.

Another great way to add seating to a limited space is to make your pieces do double duty by using an ottoman as a cocktail table.
Smaller ottomans can be housed under a sofa table and pulled out when extra guests arrive. They can also add a touch of color to an otherwise neutral room.

Prints, prints and more prints!

Are you looking for that final detail to enhance the beauty of your room? Hildreths offers a wide variety of prints for every room in your home.

What ever is the piece or pieces that you chose, always remember:

- In general, artwork should be hung so that the center point of the picture or grouping   is at about eye level for the average person.
- Another technique to remember is that a grouping of pictures should be thought of as one unit. Test an arrangement of pictures by laying everything out on a large table (or on the floor), playing with combinations until you hit upon one that works.
Laying them out on paper is even better since you'll be able to trace around each object and determine where picture hangers should be installed.
- Also, choose smaller pictures for narrow walls and larger works for big wall spaces.
- Finally, when hanging art over a piece of furniture it should not be longer than the width of the furniture.
